For several years, the Torpedo Factory Art Center served as government storage space for items varying from munitions to dinosaur bones. In 1974, after the city of Alexandria purchased the property from the U.S. government, the Torpedo Factory Art Center opened as a space for artists.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center houses 82 art studios showcasing artists working in every possible medium ranging from sculpture, glass, wire, paintings, photographs, jewelry, clothing, works in enamel and exquisitely crafted ceramics.
