Visa-Exempt Countries
Visa Exempt: Kenya and Djibouti Citizens do not require a visa to travel to Ethiopia.
Visa On Arrival: tourist visa on arrival can be obtained at Bole International Airport for nationals and residents of: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Democratic people's Republic of Korea (northern Korea), Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea (south Korea), the Russian Federation, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and USA.
Eritrean nationals must obtain an entry visa prior to their departure to Ethiopia.
What Else Do I Need to Do Before Traveling to Ethiopia?
Double check that your passport will be valid for at least six months after the date you plan to exit Ethiopia and that it has a minimum of 2 blank visa pages.
Depending on the countries you have visited before traveling to Ethiopia, you may be required to show proof of the Yellow Fever Vaccine. It is also recommended that travelers to certain provinces have the polio vaccine or a booster, and insect precautions should be taken as well.
The Embassy
The Embassy of Ethiopia is located at the international center area near the Office of the Foreign Mission (OFM) of the Department of State, University of the District of Columbia (UDC), and the INTELSAT Headquarter.
U.S. Citizens
U.S. Citizens need a visa to travel to Ethiopia, whether for business or tourism. Ethiopian tourist visas are available to U.S. citizens upon arrival only at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. This means that you can travel to Ethiopia without a visa and apply for when you arrive.
Business visas of up to three months validity can also be obtained at Bole International Airport upon arrival, but only if the traveler has a sponsoring organization in Ethiopia that has made prior arrangements for issuance through the Ethiopian Main Department for Immigration & Nationality in Addis Ababa. A Government of Ethiopia policy prevents travelers born in Eritrea, regardless of their current nationality, from receiving tourist visas at the airport.
