Museum Leave the station through the 14th Street Exit.
Museum Walk north on 14th Street NW until you reach Thomas Circle. Cross or go around the circle and walk northeast onto Vermont Avenue NW.

The Museum

The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site (also known as the Bethune Museum and Archives) is a research center and storing facility for historical records related to Mrs. Bethune and Black women. Mrs. Bethune bought the house in 1942 and lived on the property for the next 7 years when the location became the first national headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women.

Admission to the Bethune Museum is free of charge, and no admission tickets are needed.

Parking

Street parking is very limited and restricted. Make sure you read the signs. The closest parking garage is beneath the Washington Plaza Hotel on the northeast quadrant of Thomas Circle at Vermont Avenue and 'M' Street. We suggest using public transportation.

Hours of Operation

The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site is open 7 days a week. Visitors should call ahead to schedule tours in advance.

During the summer months
April 1 - October 31

The Council House is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last tour of the day beginning at 4 p.m.

During the winter months
November 1 - March 31

The Council House is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the last tour of the day beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
