During the construction of the Supreme Court, a classical Corinthian architectural style was selected in order to harmonize with the nearby Library of Congress. The Supreme Court building was designed on a scale in keeping with the importance of the Supreme Court and the Judiciary as a coequal branch of government, and as a symbol of "the national ideal of justice in the highest sphere of activity".
