The Library of Congress is the research library of the U. S. Congress.
It is the largest library in the world by shelf space and number of books. The Library of Congress is located in front of the U.S. Capitol Building and next to the Supreme Court in Washington DC.

The Library was established by an act of Congress in 1800 when President John Adams signed a bill providing for the transfer of the government from Philadelphia to Washington DC.
