During the late 18th Century, it was the dream of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison to have a national botanic garden at the seat of government. In 1820, Congress granted land on the national mall for a botanic garden. In 1842, the garden's first greenhouse was constructed. Since 1849 the Botanic Garden has been located at the eastern end of the national mall.

Since its humble beginnings in a single green house, the U.S. Botanic Garden has grown into a national showcase with more than 38,000 square feet of displays under a single roof. Approximately 1 million people visit the U.S. Botanic Garden each year.
