The National Museum of American History is located between the Smithsonian Station and Federal Triangle Station. Both metro stations are on the Orange, Silver, and Blue lines of the Metro System. The Smithsonian Station has two exits. When visiting the museum, leave the Smithsonian Station through "The Mall" exit (12th St. at Jefferson Drive SW). Use the map and directions below to find suggested routes to the museum.

Approximately 0.2 mile, 5 min walk

The Museum

The National Museum of American History is devoted to the scientific, cultural, social, technological, and political development of the United States.

The Museum has approximately 3 million objects in its collections, and about 5-8% of the collection is on view at any one time. They have everything from the original Star-Spangled Banner and Abraham Lincoln's top hat to Dizzy Gillespie's angled trumpet and Dorothy's ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz".

The collections form a fascinating mosaic of American life and comprise the greatest single collection of American history.

Special Extended Hours:

On days with extended hours the Museum remains open until 7:30 p.m. However, note that there are exceptions and the schedule is subject to change.

Parking

There is no public parking facility at the Smithsonian on the National Mall. There are a limited number of free, 3-hour limit, on-street parking spaces near National Mall museums along Jefferson and Madison Drives; for visitors with disabilities, vehicles must display the appropriate plate or permit while parked in designated handicapped parking spaces. There are numerous commercial parking lots throughout the city.
