Russell Senate Office

The Russell Senate Office Building (built 1903-1908) is the oldest of the Senate office buildings as well as a significant example of the Beaux Arts style of architecture.

In need of space for offices and functions for legistators and their staff, the Senate authorized the construction of the Russell Senate Office Building. The Russell Building was occupied in 1909 by the Senate of the 61st Congress.

For decades, this was the only Senate Office Building (SOB), until construction of the Dirksen SOB in 1958. At that time, the two buildings were just the Old SOB (OSOB) and New SOB (NSOB), but in 1971, this building was named after a distinguished late-19th senator from Georgia, Richard Brevard Russell. The NSOB was named a few years later for the very distinguished Senator from Illinois, Everett Dirksen.

To conform to the scale of the U.S. Capitol Building, the Senate Office Building rises only 3 stories above ground on its Constitution Avenue side. Due to the steep slope of its side streets, it is 5 stories above ground facing C Street. The architects similarly kept the design of the office building simple, to avoid any detraction from the Capitol. The exterior of the building is lined with a colonnade of Doric columns and faced with white marble and limestone.
