The Memorial

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is dedicated to the memory of the 3rd U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson. As the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson is one of the founding fathers of the United States.

The Jefferson Memorial is modeled after the Pantheon in Rome. It has a neoclassical design using columns and dome to achieve visual harmony. The interior walls are engraved with inscriptions taken from the Declaration of Independence and from Jefferson's other writings.

The Jefferson Memorial is located on the Tidal Basin, surrounded by Cherry Blossom trees. It has a direct line of sight to the White House. In fact, the Jefferson Memorial is one of the first things every sitting U.S. President sees when he gets up in the morning, assuming he is looking out the window.
